Gym, what a wonderful place for self-improvement. Except the fact that some people really like to mess things up for you. And pretending to be an all-known man of science.

Yep, you guessed it right. It’s our classic gym-bros, the bros who really have folly but pretend to be an expert by helping out newbies.

Every gym has its own gym-bros. And their speech is what we call “Bro-Science”. Simply, their sayings and ideas will make you uncomfortable in the first place. What’s worse is that they influence you with their normal gym-bro tone and sayings.

“Dude, max out your bench-press. More plated means more dates man.”

As a newbie, I really suffered much in the gym thanks to the typical gym-bros. Slowly, I learned my way to walk past their science to the path of real science.

Today’s shot will be all about our classic bro-science and tips on actual science aside it.

So, let’s start our work.

1. More Weight and Less RoM

Pretty much every gym bro that I met told me to go max and pop out a baby rep. And I’m pretty sure some of you guys faced it as well. Let me make it clear.

Range of Motion aka RoM (I made that word) is a very important part of your daily workout. The more range you do, the harder and more effective the exercise gets. And also getting deep range on every exercise will ensure activation of essential muscle groups.

Now let’s take a look at the science and bro-science behind it.

Bro-Science:

When it comes to RoM, pretty sure a gym-bro won’t obviously care about that. They will definitely tell you to add on more plates than you handle and end up popping some quarter aka baby reps.

To them, it doesn’t matter as long as they can move an inch with the load.

Efficiency, no man; Full range, don’t care; Heavy loads, yeah man.

What Science Say

When it comes to real science, obviously efficiency is a factor here. It is both logically and practically proven that a full range in exercises results in maximum muscle activation and better pumping.

Also, solid reps ensure the build of solid strength and muscle.

2. Skip Leg Day

“Who needs legs when you have Biceps?”

Another great advice you can get from the gym-bros is to skip the leg day. Many of you might disagree with this. But from what I saw, at my time people used to skip leg day. It was a common and very easy job to do.

Generally speaking, not everyone but it’s common for many gym-bros to trade off leg day with shoulder or another muscle exercise. To them, leg day is either too painful or too boring.

But it’s not an ideal option and a good advice at all.

What Science Say:

Leg contains some of the biggest and strongest muscles in the body like the quadriceps and glutes. So, it is very important to regularly and effectively train these muscles. Also, leg exercise also allows you to train your core and stability for overall fitness.

Leg movements like squats and lunges will improve your joints and tendons and make your lowered body as strong as the upper.

So next time when you hear an advice of skipping leg day, skip the people instead of legs days. Because these bros are just cheating themselves.

3. Drug Enhanced or Natural?

Ok this one is a pretty sensitive one. Many of our gym-bros start off being natural but end up being on PED, SARMS or other bodybuilding drugs.

Now I know, some might disagree with me that not all gym-bros are the same and not everyone is on drugs. I totally agree with that. From my experience, the closest gym-brother of mine ended up being on PED and Steroids.

The bad part about this is some good people fall for it. I mean I’ve seen many newbies in the gym get influenced by these bros and end up being on drugs they simply don’t require.

Most of the time, a pretty jacked body can be achieved fully naturally. But some people decide not to work that hard.

Also, to mention that our gym bros influence newbies and beginners in the gym. These newbies who didn’t have any experience, they think and dream of achieving the perfect body like our gym bros which is not a natural physique.

To be honest, I’ve seen many. And I would tell you that your perfect body can be achieved naturally.

Talk of Science:

Scientifically speaking, people working out progressive weight training would be able to achieve their “Noob Gains” in 1–2 years. People with good genetics achieve and gain muscle mass faster and their noob gains.

On the other hand, average people like us achieve gains a little slowly. That’s it. We gain muscle mass slowly and we have to work harder to get where we want to. Which means we can naturally have good gains and body.

No need to listen to these bros and take up PEDs. Be natural.

4. Dude, You’re Doing It Wrong

Here comes the perfect formers. Another sign of a gym-bro you may have seen is that no matter how you do an exercise, they’ll just simply criticize you and say you’re doing it wrong.

Newbies are the real prey here.

Let’s say that you’re doing bench press with quite a comfortable weight that you can handle easily. You are certain about your form and position. But ask a gym-bro and he will tell you that your form is wrong or a little over here or there and like these craps.

Basically, to them, your form is perfect when they finish giving you these craps. Most of the time, they don’t give reliable advice and end up wasting your time.

If you ask me, I’ll tell you that your form is good enough for you. It’s alright if your form’s not perfect all the time in a workout. As long as your right muscles are engaged and you do it, it’s alright.

5. Eat Big to Get BIG

Traditional and most used speech in my opinion. Gym-bros alongside many fitness influencers say that you have to eat big to get big.

I’ve seen many newbies including me in the gym hear this speech over and over again. At first, I used to think that I had to eat like our gym-bros in order to get big.

With time, I learned that there’s more than just eating. You can’t just eat dozens of proteins and get muscle. Unfortunately, our bros in the gym just throw this at us without caring or knowing.

I admit that it’s actually true to be honest. Except the fact that the gym-bros and influencers don’t lay out what to eat and what not. You have to choose your diet plan based on your body.

Let me make it clear.

Simply, you can’t just eat more than your average regular diet. You have to first find out how many calories you need per day. Then you need to add or remove 100 or 200 extra calories from the diet.

Which means you can’t start a 5000 calories diet plan when you need only 1500 calories a day. Start from your level and work your way up. You’ll find that you’ll grow big with your calories surplus.

6. No Pain, No gain

I get it. It’s true. But truth to be told, our gym-bros may have taken it a little far than we need.

I mean you need to work hard to gain strength and muscle. But you also need to take rest as well. You can’t expect to put on muscle by going to the gym 7 days a week. You gotta have some rest days.

Our gym bros give out advice to the beginners to work out every day at the gym. To them, going 7 days will get you ripped. Even I was one of the newbies too when I was told to workout 6–7 days. I also thought at first that if I work hard, I will gain more and more.

But the reality is not like that.

Simply saying, you need to give you fatigue muscle aka muscle soreness time to recover and regen. Working out every day won’t give your muscles time to regenerate.

So, in reality, you won’t gain muscle going 7 days a week. Rest, workout and rest. It’s the real cycle.

Some Last Words

So, it’s pretty much all for today. I hope you enjoyed this article.

Pretty much every gym has its own gym bros. But all the advice heard is the same, or to me at least. And I’ve heard many.

To be honest, you don’t learn anything in one day. It takes time, even in the hard way or the simplest of the ways. You learn from experience which doesn’t come in a night.

Unfortunately, our gym-bros advice is not the best. I feel bad for the newbies who fell for this advice and learned the hard way, myself included.

After all of that, I’ll say to be a Gym-Pro, not a Gym-Bro.

Before ending today’s topic, I just wanna say that thank you for reading this story and giving your time to read. If you enjoyed reading, you can check out my other stories too.
